I got the best birthday present yesterday - the all clear from the surgeon to walk without crutches for the first time in 2 1/2 months! It feels very weird wandering around without them, the best thing is that I can now carry stuff; the only downside is that I now have no excuse not to do the dishes! My leg has got a bit skinny from non-weight bearing, but the muscle tone will come back quickly.
Having no training (or work!) has meant I have been able to spend a bit more time relaxing down at Lake Hawea which has been awesome. The lake was perfect for 'icing' the foot!
I am going to be starting back into training on 10th January which I am really looking forward to. I am going to be working with Angus Ross for the first few months doing general conditioning before starting back with Andrew in April when we get back into more technical work.
2011 is going to be all about getting back into top shape and working towards Olympic qualification in summer 2011/12. Whilst I am gutted to not be able to have a crack at World Champs I think that it may be a blessing in disguise as I will be able to take things slow and get lots of solid training under the belt without the time-pressure of major competition next winter. This will undoubtedly be beneficial leading into an Olympic year.
Ending the year with screws in my foot wasn't exactly what I had planned but if I look back at 2010 we still achieved a lot: two Commonwealth Games qualifiers, 4th NZ heptathlon title, personal best in shot put (plus a win in the shot in Delhi!), I was the strongest I have ever been (90 kg powerclean), and I was able to line up in Delhi in the black singlet, represent NZ and have a good crack at it!
I hope you all have a fantastic Christmas and New Year holiday and a HUGE thank you again for all your support in 2010, bring on 2011!
